Introduction to Global Ancient and Medieval Studies

Description

This course explores the ancient and/or medieval world from a global perspective using texts, visual and/or material culture to examine ideas, religions, artistic and literary genres, philosophies, or historical events that shaped and defined pre-modern cultures and societies before 1492. Students will be introduced to the ways that scholars have examined these topics and how such topics can be approached from an interdisciplinary perspective and by drawing different types of evidence together for analysis. This course aims to encourage students to examine the cross-cultural, political, social, and economic connections between different ancient and medieval civilizations of the eastern hemisphere that were connected through trade, migration, warfare and empire. The exact topics, evidence, and approaches discussed will vary from semester to semester based on the instructor’s expertise and training.
