Description

The major goal of this class is to provide students with professional tools for research, studies, and career development in psychology. Special attention is focused on issues and challenges that might confront students and researchers in their professional development and careers. A number of practical skills such as building a professional CV, developing skills of presenting and publishing research, network building, jobs search, communication skills and time management are addressed. Relevance to student’s own evolving interests, skills, and professional standards are emphasized. This class uses a seminar format in which students meet with the faculty in Human Development and invited speakers. These weekly seminars serve three functions. First, each seminar is a forum for sharing information about professional development, career building, research and practical activities in psychology. Second, it serves as a resource for group discussions, sharing, and solving problems that may arise in students’ professional activities. Finally, it provides a forum for professional presentations that feature both (a) students who practice their professional skills and get feedback to their presentations and (b) faculty who share their research so that students familiarize themselves with recently evolving directions in psychology and gain access to the “insider” perspectives on research and professional careers. Readings will be assigned by each faculty in preparing for their presentations. During the course of the semester, the students prepare drafts of documents relevant to the topic at hand.
