Course Title

Discourse Theory and Analysis

Department(s)

Description

This course reviews theories of discourse and relevant analytic approaches for research. After a review of contemporary approaches, we focus on verbal and non-verbal discourse as active meaning-making in context. We consider issues of diversity, development, and place, which involve strategies for analyzing ideology, silence, performance, and other influential phenomena individuals use to interact in society (including in research settings). Readings are drawn from across the social sciences and humanities. We consider naturally occurring discourses (such as those elicited in fieldwork) and discourses elicited in research designs with interviews, narratives, conversations, and non-verbal interactions. We also address ethical issues relevant to diverse theoretical assumptions and practices. The course involves reading, participating in class discussions and labs (applying specific techniques and using computer software), writing three short papers and a 10-page final paper.
