Course Title

Human Development and Globalization

Department(s)

Description

This course examines research on the nature and effects of contemporary globalization processes, with a focus on economics, politics, and culture affecting social, cognitive, and physical development, primarily of children and youth. We consider these processes in the context of practices in education, interactive technologies, employment, culture, and civil society. The course begins by defining 'globalization' and 'human development' from a variety of scholarly and practical perspectives. Drawing on applied projects such as the United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child and the Millennium Development Goals, we review goals, strategies, and preliminary findings to guide future critical and creative research on issues that threaten child and youth development. Contexts of inquiry into the interaction of globalization and developmental processes include political violence and transition; displacement and migration; child labor; children's rights; tensions and interactions between education and culture, with case studies in Africa, South America, South Asia, Europe, and the United States.
