Description

This course offers an overview of key current topics and issues in the burgeoning field of international migration. The course incorporates the experiences of major immigrant-receiving countries around the world, with an emphasis on exploring both the key theoretical debates in the field and the empirical data and case studies on which these debates hinge. The course focuses on established researchfrom the Global North, notably North America and Europe, where many major migration theories and concepts have been developed, as well asnewer research from the Global South. Attention will be paid to such significant issues of international migration as assimilation, the labor market,race and ethnic relations, forced migrations and refugees/asylum seekers, gender and migration, transnationalism, the second generation, andnativism/host-society hostility to immigrants, among others.
