Course Title

Critical Inquiries into Quantification and Statistics

Department(s)

Description

Quantitative designs, methods and analyses persist as the dominant approach to research in psychology, social science and educational studies. In many ways, statistical data define knowledge and truth in our culture. Like any privileged standpoint, quantification – unlike its qualitative counterpart - is largely taken for granted as essential to science and is rarely asked to justify itself as a worthwhile pursuit. This course seeks to explore the traditional uses and misuses of quantitative research, the long history of critical inquiries into quantification and statistics, and the application of numbers in policy making, movements, and organizing. This class will emphasize issues of social justice, emancipatory research, and public scholarship.
